Short Term Therapy


All currently registered WSU students may be evaluated by a CAPS counselor to receive free and confidential personal counseling at Counseling and Psychological Services.  CAPS offers a short term treatment model, if either longer term treatment or a higher level of care are deemed necessary, a referral to an outside clinic, agency, or private practitioner will be made.  Individual, couples, and group counseling are available.

Outreach Services



Description

Staff members provide outreach programs to university classes and groups on various topics such as stress management, time management, test anxiety, depression, grief and loss, anger and violence, rape education, self-esteem, assertiveness, and a variety of other mental health topics.

CAPS is available to the entire campus community for consultation and educational activities regarding student and mental health issues. CAPS attempts to create viable liaisons with offices across campus and collaboratively create a healthy campus community. A CAPS staff member can also come out and talk about available counseling services. If you would like to request a speaker from CAPS to attend your event, please fill out our outreach request form.

Description

CAPS offers a number of groups for currently registered Wayne State students. Enrollment is free and can be made directly through CAPS. Most groups meet weekly for ninety minutes. Starting dates for the groups will vary. Once a group forms, it is closed to new referrals for the remaining of that semester. Current Groups (Fall 2008):

Grief & Loss Support Group

Can Any good come from grief? When individuals think about losing a loved one, generally feelings of sadness, depression  and other negative emotions come to mind. The bond between individuals is unique and represents connectedness, safety, and love. The loss of a mother, father, grandparent, brother, sister, or friend can result in feeling completely disconnected, unsafe, and heavy-hearted. If you are experiencing this please come to our group.

 

 

 

Past Group Topics:

 

Mental Illness Support Group

This support group is open to Wayne State Students who have been diagnosed with mental illness that requires ongoing treatment. The group will focus on the personal, social, and academic challenges that students face while attending college and managing a mental illness. Goals will include helping members explore problems they are having and possible solutions that will support their efforts to continue making progress in college.

 

Sexual Abuse Survivors Group

This group is for students to learn effective coping strategies and techniques regarding surviving sexual abuse, increasing self-esteem, learning to accept their bodies again, dealing with grief, loss, and violation
issues, and achieving a sense of safety and comfort when in group or family settings.

 

Eating Disorders Group

This group is designed to educate and support individuals concerned about eating behaviors and body image. The group offers educational, supportive, and intervention strategies to build positive self-esteem and healthy eating behaviors. The group intends to offer prevention and treatment approaches in defining and achieving participant's goals.

 

Anger Management Group

Through didactics and group discussion students will learn the psychological and physiological effects of anger as well as coping techniques to manage the emotion in this 8-week program.
